Panchindiya Sutra
This sutra (hymn, verses in praise of) is venerating the 36 qualities of Jain Āchāryas. It is generally recited at the beginning of Sāmāyika.
Panchindiya-samvaraṇo taha nava-viha-bambhachera-gutidharo
Cauviha-kasāya-mukko, ia atthārasa-gunehim sanjutto …1
Pancha-mahavvaya-jutto, panch-vihāyāra-pālana samattho
Panch-samio tigutto, chattisa-guṇo guru majjha ...2
Āchāryas (my guru):
Restrain their 5 senses, observe 9 types of celibacy, are free from 4 types of passions (kasayas) – they possess these 18 qualities
Observe 5 great vows (Maha vratas), observe 5 types of conduct, observe 5 types of carefulness (samitis) and 3 restraints (guptis) – they possess these 36 qualities
