Tivihār Upvāsa Pachkhān

Pachkhān to have only adequately boiled, cooled water during the day

Upvāsa means abstinence (i.e. abstaining from enjoyments). It is a combination of two words Upa (उप) which means near, close to and Vasati (वसति) which means stay, live. Thus it’s essence is to stay close to the soul. The soul is an independent entity separate from the body. Therefore, by not eating and focusing on the needs of the body, one can focus on the soul (meditation, prayers, etc).

Tivihār pachkhān means abstaining from 3 types of consumables (foods, snacks/fruits & mouth refreshers).

Adequately boiled, cooled water (this lasts upto 3 prahars) can be had during the period 48 minutes after sunrise and before sunset. Each time to drink water, it is customary to sit on the floor, recite 3 navkar before consuming water and then to recite 3 navkar after water has been consumed and before getting up.
