Santikaram Stotra

This hymn is believed to have been composed by Munisundara Suri who was born in 1379AD and became Acharya in 1421AD. He was a disciple of Somasundara Suri who was born in 1373AD and at a young age of 25 years became the 52nd Acharya in the lineage of Lord Mahaveer’s chief disciples. Acharya Munisundara is known to remember or concentrate on one thousand things (Sahasra (सहस्र) avadhāna (अवधान)→ concentration of mind / attention) at any one time and no wonder he was awarded the prestigious title of Kālisaraswati. This hymn is prevalent amongst the Swetāmbara liturgy. He had chronicled list of all Acharya since the time of Lord Mahaveer.

This hymn is believed to destroy all evils and eradicate hardships. Various seed mantras have been used in the hymn including invocation to demi-gods & demi-godesses. According to the Jain philosophy, the Tirthankaras are vitaraga which means they are equanimous and neither favour nor denounce any soul. Therefore, with the passage of time the tradition of revering demi-gods and godesses became prevalent for devotees to seek boons or divine help for any problems or hardships.

It is the third composition of the 9 smaraṇa (स्मरण). Any prayer which needs to be recited regularly is known as smaraṇa. The main essence of this prayer is in the 13th verse (Santināha Sammadditthi Rakkham). This composition is like an armour protecting the soul as it is embedded with mantras for protection based on Suri Mantra. In the 4th verse, names of Gods and Goddesses are invoked based on their establishment in the Suri Mantra. In the 5th and 6th verses, names of the 16 Gods and Goddesses of learning are mentioned. In the 7th to 10th verses names of the 24 attendant Gods and Goddesses of the Tirthankaras are euologised. In the 11th and 12th verse all divine beings with right vision and faith are invoked to protect the entire community. The 13th verse mentions the fruits of reciting this composition regularly thrice a day. The last verse is kṣepaka (क्षेपक) which means it has been an addition to the original composition and therefore some do not recite it. It mentions that Munisundarsuri who composed this recitation gives obeisance to his Guru.
